I thought the deal was pretty bad, no matter how you look at it. Not a knock on the guy you got, but i thought Schneider was more in the Letang area...

In terms of value, it's not as bad as people are saying (for both teams, actually).

In terms of the mess Vancouver has to deal with now re: Luongo.. well, glad I'm nowhere near it.

Ian Esplen: Thoughts on the Schneider deal
it's over

- IanEsplen

You are missing the point, Mr. Esplen.

29 other GMs didn't want Lu for free, because his contract will cause salary cap mayhem down the road.

Guess what is still down Vancouver's road?

Yeah, yeah, blabbity-blabbity Lu is still a great goalie.

29 other GMs didn't want him.

I don't hate the trade as much as I hate the situation they left themselves in with luongo. Luongo has been "a true professional" but this is going to piss him off to no end..... Hopefully he still delivers on the ice

They have may have got the guy they wanted in Horvat however they have been left with a confused and angry Roberto Luongo. Gillis made a massive mess of this.

How can the Canucks organization reasonably expect that Luongo will want to be there in Vancouver after the way he has been jerked around. Should be interesting to say the least.

I'm not sure if Horvat is ready to anchor the third line next year, but at the same time if he makes the cut he has my vote of confidence. True performer and extremely clutch, as most of you know.

Keep dreaming. Luongo is a grown man, not a child. He's not gonna breach his contract.

My biggest question for next year is what to do we do with the Kassassin, Schroeds, Jensen and Gaunce

I am from london where horvat played junior and ive had the privilege of watching this player grow into a legit nhler.like ian said soon you will be saying cory who.this guy is a workhorse at both ends of the ice and has a motor that just wont quit.smart skilled and tough you cant want much more from a player.yes cory is a good goalie, but are you fans forgetting how good luongo is, still top5 goalies in the league imo.this is not a backwards move for the nucks more of a leap forward to get the secondary scoring that you dont have and some extra toughness bo will drop em too and can hold his own.gl bo, you will be missed in a knights jersey.

Vancouver can reasonably expect that a guy collecting millions of dollars will put forth an effort.

I don't think anyone is suggesting he will breach his contract but if he really doesn't want to be there then why would they keep him. Luongo could make this difficult for the Canucks/Gillis if he wanted to.

*** Poor luongo. Why would Gillis keep someone that clearly does not want to be there. It's the worst handled situation by a GM in resent memory. Terrible GM. Got greedy and passed on multiple offers in the past. I hope this ends badly and Gillis is done in Vancouver. Even as a Leaf fan I still feel bad for Canucks fans that have to live with that terrible GM running their team. They need a new face and a fresh start.***

I don't have a beef with the decision to trade Schneider; in fact at this stage it was really the only card left to play. I do take issue with the many poor decisions that ultimately led to the need to trade him. Management boxed them into a corner through a calamity of errors, which led to them eventually pulling the trigger on the only move they had left, which landed them an alleged blue chip prospect.

I'm pretty confident that this Horvat character will be a solid player for a long time, but really, who knows... he's a friggin' draft pick. We traded a known great goalie for a player who may or may not ever contribute to the team, and really does little to address the "closing window" situation.

This trade just makes me feel dirty. Enjoy your keeper, Devils, he's a gem. I need a drink.

As they say in poker "sometimes you need to take your loss and move on" instead Vancouver has a weaker, older goalie who doesn't want to be there. Gillis played his hand about as poorly as possible and instead of dumping Lou for peanuts but dropping the contract he is now stuck with it. I neither like nor hate Vancouver, but have watched this just because it is some of the worst management of assets I have seen in some time. Hope your pick turns out well and helps mitigate some of the damage of losing your best goaltender

Of course they can and Luongo likely will put on his big boy pants. Still is a bad situation for him to be in.

Sure they can. And Lu will. The problem I see is that this entire drama is viewed under a microscope. Even if Lu puts the past behind him and manages to plays well this year it could be a full season or more before the media relents on this storyline. I don't like it for Lu's sake nor his team mates. OH! And now Torts has to answer questions about this??? (LOL)
